Chambers USA, America’s Leading Lawyers for Business has once again named Milberg Executive Committee chair and partner Sanford P. Dumain in its annual rankings for “Leading Lawyers” in plaintiffs’ securities litigation. Chambers has included Mr. Dumain since 2010 in its USA edition as a leading plaintiffs’ securities litigator in New York.
This year, Chambers USA singled him out for his successful representation as lead plaintiffs’ counsel in a series of securities fraud class actions against Oppenheimer. “Sanford P. Dumain of Milberg LLP is held in high esteem for his plaintiff-side expertise, with sources describing him as ‘an excellent lawyer’ who is ‘street-smart’ and capable,” according to the rankings guide.
Chambers determines its rankings based on submissions put forward by firms, interviews and internal research. A team of more than 140 researchers conducts thousands of interviews to compile a completely new guide each year. Law firms and attorneys are ranked based on technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment and other qualities valued by clients.
As one of Milberg’s senior litigation partners, Mr. Dumain has more than 30 years of litigation experience and represents plaintiffs in cases involving securities fraud, consumer fraud, insurance fraud, and violations of the antitrust laws. He was lead counsel in some of the largest plaintiffs securities cases ever litigated, including In re Tyco International Ltd. Securities Litigation, MDL 1335 (D.N.H.)and In re Nortel Networks Corporation Securities Litigation, No. 01-1855 (S.D.N.Y.), recovering $3.2 billion and $1 billion for investors respectively. Mr. Dumain also served as lead counsel in the securities class actions against Biovail, which resulted in cash settlements of over $138 million, the third highest net recovery ever attained in cases involving Canadian companies. Mr. Dumain also successfully represented the City of San Jose, California against 13 of the City’s broker-dealers and its outside accountants in connection with major losses in unauthorized bond trading.
